One of the very fun things about photojournalism is learning. Today I ‘learned’ how sushi was made, by way of…

Erin Moore is a member of Westerville Special Olympics and her parents are wonderful life long friends, so much for disclosure, and I have had the pleasure of watching Erin grow from a baby into a young adult and light up everyone’s life that she meets.

Mark with Snowfox Sushi that has space at the Kroger, Hamilton Rd and Morse Rd, sees Erin and her parents Sean and Cindy as they shop on a regular basis and have come to know one another.  Mark made an offer to show Erin how to make sushi.  The rest is history.

So I spent an hour watching Erin learn to make sushi and seeing Mark having a great time showing her.

Remember: Let me win, but if I can not win let me be be brave in the attempt. Take a moment to visit Westerville Special Olympics and National Special Olympics and be brave in your attempt to volunteer and have a great fish tale to tell.

Check out all the images…

bible, Dad, drawing, kindness

I had breakfast at the McD’s near work periodically and this morning at the table next to me were 3 gentlemen having a bible session.  It reminded me of Dad and his group gathering to read, share and catch up on life in general.  I was hearing the same bits of conversation from them.

As I got ready to leave one of the men handed me a piece of paper.  It was an amazing wonderful sketching he had done while I was sitting there.

So now I have a simple piece of paper that I will frame as a reminder of Dad and the world is filled with the kindness of others.

In the late 60’s we lived in Louisville, Ky. Dad was working at appliance park for GE and I had returned from NM where I had attended college at NMMI for a couple of years. I was dating Cathy Thomas at the time and we were going to see a movie downtown.  As we turned into the parking lot I stopped to let this young black man walk down the sidewalk, we parked and ran into the young man, oddly familiar , again on the way to the theater. Tall handsome and very solid looking.  We had passed Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali.

This was to be the first of a couple of additional meetings with Muhammad Ali.

The most time I had around Muhammad Ali was the week before he fought Chuck Wepner on March 24, 1975.  I was with a young sports reporter with the News Journal where we both worked.  It was an interesting week watching Ali workout, chat with people and to see him away from the crowds.  We saw Larry Holmes knock him down during a sparing round and had a feeling Holmes would be champ one day.  Interestingly during one of our days up there everyone had left and Holmes was left behind.  Not sure how we got him into my Ford Pinto, but we did and back to his hotel.

In later years I saw him and Veronica Porsche at the Kentucky Derby.

So now I will go back thru the years of negs and slides to find all the images to scan and post.

I will say beyond the lights and hype I met a very kind, gentle and intelligent person.
