HI All, with no explanation needed, it’s been a long year.

It began great with a trip to Cuba in January via Global Volunteers.

That was the tip of the iceberg that is still working it’s way around the world.

While visiting Hemmingway’s house I became enveloped in a group of tourist from… China. A day or so later the virus announcement happened and we wondered about getting back to the States. Last day in Cuba and we had a new housemate from… Italy. Cuban airport packed, Miami International packed. First of February and still very clueless, and… lucky!

March came the great flood. 1500 sqft under 2 ft of water in the lower basement turned production area. And it was ‘black’ water. The new house is the first on the sewer line :-] Turns out the replacement powerline pole ended up in the sewer chamber in the corner of the yard. Sewer chamber filled with dirt washed from around the pole. The basement was convenient so it filled. Lost 3/4 of a decade of BW images from the 70’s and about 10k color images. Yep, up off the floor on racks out of the way. Water was so high and forceful that it took the containers – heavy containers – off the racks and turned them over. :-[ By the time I got the water pumped out and had a chance to start looking around it was too late to save. Everything had be so violently pushed around it was hard to what was where, plus everything was covered in crap water, literally.

Now back to that virus thing. A crew showed up to help cleanup, which was great. Could not have done it myself. Had 10ish people at anyone moment in the basement with and without masks for a couple of days. Then 2 weeks of repair and replace people in and out. Might have dodged a virus bullet there.

Spent the rest of the year seeing a few friends and keeping to the house, plus reworking that flood thing. Had to start from scratch, again. Very depressing every time I looked at the containers with the lost images.

It’s been a long year for everyone, much longer for some. To those that have lost a loved one a heartfelt hug.

So we come to the end… of this endless year. Time to brighten up, think positive, make new plans, get shot and hopefully move on. To that end a little something to cheery to look at. Within minutes of the house a little light at the end of the tunnel.

Enjoy the Holiday’s and look forward to a new New Year.

While going thru a collection of photographic and movie posters I came across a set of posters from the old photo dept at OSU.  Wondering where some of the old gang is now.

Lori McCargish, Mike Williams, Lorraine Vibberts Kaplan, Lucretia Knapp and Jose Cardenas with Mohsen Shirzadian plus a signature that I can’t make out.  Jose? know who it is?

Enjoy and share…

fun, little girl, screaming, spider, web, yikes

It was to be a quick and simple trip, pickup milk.  Got to the car and opened the door for Lola and then my door, caught a glimpse of something shiny  and pulled back to see what it was.

Spider web from the steering wheel to the seat and up to the visor!  If I had sat down I would have had a spider on my nose and screaming like a little girl!!

Found a stick and attempted to gently remove the said spider to somewhere else with something more it’s size to eat.  Touched the web to get him out in a flash like Spider Man he disappeared up to the ceiling. So much for the gentle touch… I figured if I got in to drive it would drop down and latch onto my nose and back to screaming like a little girl!

Found him, I know it was a him because he was playing hid and seek. If it was a girl she would have gone for my throat, end of story and the little girl thing again. So hiding in the visor I took the stick to try the removal thing again. Spider took a 200 ft, in spider dimensions, leap to the seat and headed for the crack at the back of the seat. Thoughts of spider crawling into the back of my pants flooded my mind briefly and I cut him off and flicked him out of the car. Last I saw he was running under the car.

I’m wait for him to find his way back into the car, drop down from the visor and give me the finger, then grab my nose, screaming girl again.

Welcome to Saturday, hope your day to quiet and uneventful…

Barbara Bush, family, Love, Mom, mom's, Mother, Mrs. Bush

Today is Mom’s birthday and today First Lady Barbara Bush passed.  These women were of an era gone by.  Mom bought and sold over 40+ houses/homes over her lifetime. I remember Dad looking at a house and having to make a decision on to buy or not and fretting over Mom’s approval since she had not seen the house. And that was after 40 years of marriage! Mom did it all; cooking as in a master chef, fabric as in pillows and samplers and needlepoint and the stuff coyote with catus that she created, painting, raised 3 sons and lost one, played piano and the most beautiful voice.  Mom and Dad met when she sang and he played in a band back in the 40’s.

I had a chance to see and photograph the Bush’s when they were campaigning.  What I was always impressed with them was how down to earth they were.  At a debate held in Cleveland I remember Dad Bush heading out one of the cars waiting for them and hanging out, kinda lost wondering where everyone was.  Just very nice real people.

So in someway on my Mother’s birthday it would be nice to think she is there to welcome and guide Mrs. Bush on her way.

Rosh Hashanah Happy New Year

Shalom aleichem and L’shanah tovah

Today is the start of the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah, and I had a chance to attend a service tonight with a good friend.  A great sermon which I will post here later spoke of new beginnings, taking care of life.  I learned a little about the Book of Life and Book of the Dead.  And even though I was totally lost I felt so included. Could not for the life of me even with the words in front of me keep up with the songs yet they felt so comfortable on my ears.

At the end of the service there was a Mourner’s Kaddish and I thought of my good friend Perry.  While he is no longer with us I keep him alive within me and all the great times we had.  If he had been with me or rather I’d would have been with him, he would have explained everything in detail to me.  And then tongue in cheek, explain why I would never really get it.  Miss you Perry!

Here are a couple of links for those of us that want to know but don’t quite know… Rosh Hashanah and Book of Life

One last thing, part of the service is the blowing of the Shofar and I had the privilege to have photographed Meira Warshauer’s music that she wrote for a Shofar. Fits nicely with today.

One of the very fun things about photojournalism is learning. Today I ‘learned’ how sushi was made, by way of…

Erin Moore is a member of Westerville Special Olympics and her parents are wonderful life long friends, so much for disclosure, and I have had the pleasure of watching Erin grow from a baby into a young adult and light up everyone’s life that she meets.

Mark with Snowfox Sushi that has space at the Kroger, Hamilton Rd and Morse Rd, sees Erin and her parents Sean and Cindy as they shop on a regular basis and have come to know one another.  Mark made an offer to show Erin how to make sushi.  The rest is history.

So I spent an hour watching Erin learn to make sushi and seeing Mark having a great time showing her.

Remember: Let me win, but if I can not win let me be be brave in the attempt. Take a moment to visit Westerville Special Olympics and National Special Olympics and be brave in your attempt to volunteer and have a great fish tale to tell.

Check out all the images…

bible, Dad, drawing, kindness

I had breakfast at the McD’s near work periodically and this morning at the table next to me were 3 gentlemen having a bible session.  It reminded me of Dad and his group gathering to read, share and catch up on life in general.  I was hearing the same bits of conversation from them.

As I got ready to leave one of the men handed me a piece of paper.  It was an amazing wonderful sketching he had done while I was sitting there.

So now I have a simple piece of paper that I will frame as a reminder of Dad and the world is filled with the kindness of others.
