In the late 60’s we lived in Louisville, Ky. Dad was working at appliance park for GE and I had returned from NM where I had attended college at NMMI for a couple of years. I was dating Cathy Thomas at the time and we were going to see a movie downtown.  As we turned into the parking lot I stopped to let this young black man walk down the sidewalk, we parked and ran into the young man, oddly familiar , again on the way to the theater. Tall handsome and very solid looking.  We had passed Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali.

This was to be the first of a couple of additional meetings with Muhammad Ali.

The most time I had around Muhammad Ali was the week before he fought Chuck Wepner on March 24, 1975.  I was with a young sports reporter with the News Journal where we both worked.  It was an interesting week watching Ali workout, chat with people and to see him away from the crowds.  We saw Larry Holmes knock him down during a sparing round and had a feeling Holmes would be champ one day.  Interestingly during one of our days up there everyone had left and Holmes was left behind.  Not sure how we got him into my Ford Pinto, but we did and back to his hotel.

In later years I saw him and Veronica Porsche at the Kentucky Derby.

So now I will go back thru the years of negs and slides to find all the images to scan and post.

I will say beyond the lights and hype I met a very kind, gentle and intelligent person.

Dad's, Jim Cramer

Wonderful tribute that Jim Cramer wrote about his Dad who passed away earlier this week.

Link to the article:

Pop loved seven things: his business, the stock market, his independence, his workouts, his country, the Eagles and his family. He talked about them until he died Wednesday night at a hospital in Philadelphia.

Tonight at Leti and Matt’s is a family, la familia, affair for a very special event.  As we eat tamales, not just any tamales, hecho a mano tamales by Mrs. Martin, the kind you will never find anywhere but home.  Leti’s Mon and Dad are down to San Diego for a very special event as my baby brother, Matt, has a pinning ceremony tomorrow, being it is only 10:30 here.

This is one of those events that come once in a lifetime for a family.  Matt will get pinned with his first star in the Navy as a Rear Admiral Lower Half.  He is still my baby brother, but as the eldest family member I couldn’t be prouder of him as he carries on a family tradition of serving out Country.  Our Grandfather served as a Marine in WWI and Dad served in WWII in the Army Air Corps, his eldest brother served in the Army and now Matt has reached the highest honor serving in the Navy.

Tomorrow I will have more official news and pictures.

Briggs & Stratton, Cub Scout, George Romney, holiday, Mom and Dad, Thanksgiving, United States, War of the Worlds

Hi Mom and Dad:

In the past this would be it, but now with a Big Ten title game – one more game. So today is THE game day that all Buckeyes live for and hopefully will always be the cherry on top.

It has been an interesting week. I photographed a family early in the week and had the conversation about what’s to eat for Thanksgiving. Oyster stuffing became a topic and that was Mom’s thing to do. She set the bar for stuffing’s to come to the end of the years. Well that and most anything Mom cooked. It was a wonderful, comfortable conversation with the ladies talking about family and Thanksgiving.

I get to finish the week a couple of miles from where we lived in Detroit. Carl, David, our dog Pandora… the original War of the Worlds (very scary back then), Cub Scouts and Dad and I, most likely mostly Dad, build a go-cart from a lawnmower engine – Briggs and Stratton.  Dad worked for George Romney at American Motors/Kelvinator and Mom shot out the flame of a candle with a BB gun in a ‘range’ setup in the basement.

All the things of the past that should have been recorded to be remembered.

So Game Day and lots of memories. Good Ones.

Loving and Missing you.  xoxo

Getting close to the end

Hi Mom and Dad…

It’s been busy. I’ve moved into the Southern states and have taken a break. Back on the road soon to finish this project.

The Buckeyes and the Band are making waves. The Bucks are at 9-0 and play Illinois today and the Band is using some high-tech to learn and practice and being TBDBITL have upped the ante. Football season in Columbus is as crazy as ever. One more game after today and then off to that state up there.

Looks like Illinois will be getting some extra help today, they will need it. A spotter from the International Space Station. It will be a little extra fun for the game.

Hugs and Kisses… Ed

New season minus a player

The Sky wrapped itself with a dark grey blanket, weeping, crying, moaning and groaning. So started my day and the first game day without Dad. No calls, discussions, second guessing and arm-chair quarter backing. They now have great seats to watch the games, and, maybe giving a helping nudge now and then…

Last Sunset

A couple of blocks away from Dad’s condo is the ocean. Friday we lay him to rest in Fairmont, WV.

Worlds a part, Fairmont to La Jolla. When Mom & Dad started this not where they visioned the end of their journey.

So I take in this last sunset for them. Surfers catching the last wave, walking the dog down the beach, a flight of pelicans in a perfect V, couples enjoying a moment. Now Mom, Dad and David enjoy a perfect sunset every night.

God provides for the perfect days now and they are at Peace. xoxo

Buckeyes, Dad, gone

Last night Dad went home to Mom and David.  It was quiet and peaceful, but now too quiet.

The Buckeyes are playing and it just struck me that I can’t call him.  For years and years we would talk during and after the games.  Though we were across the country from each other we watched the games together.

I can remember a year that we would watch the ends of the games holding our collective breath.  Buckeyes were National Champs that year.

So watching the game today is a bit hollow.  I’m sure that will go away and I will still talk to Dad and know he is looking down on the game.
