Saturday I was reminded why I like photographing Special Olympic games.  Couple of years ago National Games were in New Jersey and Ohio had a special swim team in competition. Special as in good hard workers, not Special Olympics even though that is why they were there. While waiting on one of the teams to compete I notice a gentleman on the swim floor in a wheelchair. He got up and using a metal cane approached the pool lane. It became obvious that he had the use of just one arm and leg, but jumped into the pool to compete. Swam a freestyle competition and did very well.

Yesterday at the powerlift competition held in the Thurber Theatre at the Drake Union on campus – The Ohio State University – I was witness to another ‘special’ moment.

Young man approached the weights to be lifted with his coach and as the coach was getting the athlete set as I’ve seen the other coaches do I thought he was placing the athletes hand in the right position for the lift. As the coach left I saw this young man using just one hand to do the powerlift!  And lift he did!

The athletes of Special Olympics are a constant reminder that most anything can be accomplished if you are willing to try and the outcome is secondary.

Let me win, but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.

Shalom aleichem and L’shanah tovah

Today is the start of the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah, and I had a chance to attend a service tonight with a good friend.  A great sermon which I will post here later spoke of new beginnings, taking care of life.  I learned a little about the Book of Life and Book of the Dead.  And even though I was totally lost I felt so included. Could not for the life of me even with the words in front of me keep up with the songs yet they felt so comfortable on my ears.

At the end of the service there was a Mourner’s Kaddish and I thought of my good friend Perry.  While he is no longer with us I keep him alive within me and all the great times we had.  If he had been with me or rather I’d would have been with him, he would have explained everything in detail to me.  And then tongue in cheek, explain why I would never really get it.  Miss you Perry!

Here are a couple of links for those of us that want to know but don’t quite know… Rosh Hashanah and Book of Life

One last thing, part of the service is the blowing of the Shofar and I had the privilege to have photographed Meira Warshauer’s music that she wrote for a Shofar. Fits nicely with today.

Family life cycle photography can be a wonderful thing assuming A. you stay friends with the family and B. you live long enough to do the cycle.  I’ve know this family before now Grandma and Grandpa got married, did their wedding and all 3 of the girls. Now doing the grand kids.  Fun to see everything come full circle and in someways be a part of the family.

The gates of the Promise Land are in sight for Dad. It has been a long journey and these last few steps are difficult. The love of his family and friends will help him the rest of the way.

God bless you Dad. Let Him be at the gate and take you to Mom, David, Nonnie and Papaw and the rest of the family.

XOXO
