The 4th has always been a great time for me.  I remember sitting on the banks of the Detroit River (late 50’s OMG) watching the fireworks on the river celebrating both Canada Day and our Independence Day.  And, over the years I’ve had the experience to have photographed 4th events from all over the US. It’s a time that brings us all together.  And when I say all, I mean all from all over the world.

The country we were, and I hope we will be again contained people that opened their doors to you and came from around the globe.  I’ve photographed projects that have taken me around the US pre and post 9-11 and wondered what people would be like post. They were the same. Open and honest, giving and forthright. It seems to be the same bell curve with a couple of extremes left and right, but most of us are right in the middle.

So, take a moment to reflect as to where we came from in the past, why we came here and where do we want to be in the future.

I’m hoping that the next time I get to roam around the US I find us to be the same open heartfelt American that I’ve seen in the past.

Have a great 4th and God Bless…

These images represent immigrants sworn in to be American citizens, small town parades, back country and big town celebrations. And, people from around the world visiting Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. And the image of the youths around the Liberty Bell:  On every Fourth of July, at 2pm Eastern time, children who are descendants of Declaration signers symbolically tap the Liberty Bell 13 times while bells across the nation also ring 13 times in honor of the patriots from the original 13 states.  All images © 2018 Ed Zirkle

Last night the movie Only the Brave opened here in Columbus market. It’s about the Granite Mountain Hotshots stationed in Prescott, AZ.  On June 30, 2013, 19 members of the group were killed fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire. The movie based on that group and that fateful day is excellent. A good look into what it’s like to be a hotshot and how it affects the family life. I highly recommend this movie.

On September 12, 2013 I was fortunate to be able to tour the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, ID while on my We The People 2013 photo study around the US. They were very gracious and showed me how the system works.  They provide one of the largest communication systems in the world. There is the command center, warehouse, jump center and a garden memorial.  Quite the experience, very honored to have been there.

One of the very fun things about photojournalism is learning. Today I ‘learned’ how sushi was made, by way of…

Erin Moore is a member of Westerville Special Olympics and her parents are wonderful life long friends, so much for disclosure, and I have had the pleasure of watching Erin grow from a baby into a young adult and light up everyone’s life that she meets.

Mark with Snowfox Sushi that has space at the Kroger, Hamilton Rd and Morse Rd, sees Erin and her parents Sean and Cindy as they shop on a regular basis and have come to know one another.  Mark made an offer to show Erin how to make sushi.  The rest is history.

So I spent an hour watching Erin learn to make sushi and seeing Mark having a great time showing her.

Remember: Let me win, but if I can not win let me be be brave in the attempt. Take a moment to visit Westerville Special Olympics and National Special Olympics and be brave in your attempt to volunteer and have a great fish tale to tell.

Check out all the images…

I’m a member of the Lewis Center Business Association and photographed their 4th of July event.  An all day affair of a 5k run, kids run, parade and beach bash with fireworks.  Long day but a fun day.  Here are a couple of images and the photo gallery  from the day.  Enjoy.

American Flag, Ed Zirkle, Field of Hero's, flags, photography, photojournalism

After using SLR’s and DSLR’s over the years you get use to the instantaneous-ness of pushing a button and getting – most of the time – the image you thought/wanted.  Point and shoots have such a delay and now that smart/cell phones are taking over the process of taking a picture is not quite the compact moment we might want.

I got lucky today. Field of Hero’s in Westerville put on by the Westerville Sunrise Rotary group is up and running. This is their 6 year of this display. I don’t know the count on how many flags placed.  Will get that info later when they have finished everything.

I’ve been shooting fun stuff on my Nokia 1020 and I have a class I’m teaching in a couple of weeks at the Orange Library on smart/cell phone photography so all of the flags make for a very powerful, colorful and graphic moment.  Knelt down and tried to frame for a decent shot.  Bright sun on any phone screen is a killer and today is a gorgeous sunny day with just the right clouds.  Press the button and waited for the image to process – Nokia 1020 makes 2 files from the one image – and the result was enough to not want to shoot for the rest of the day.

Just the right moment…

Portrait of a photographer

Doing a good portrait takes a bit of time.  You want your subject to be relaxed, you want to get to the time when you capture the essence of the person you are working with.  The session should be light with a range of emotions that will give you a nice selection to present to your client.  If all goes well the last part of the session will have the image you are looking for.  Sometimes it is the last image.  Sometimes the importance of the subject and their limited time allow only a few moments and very few frames to choose from. This is where skill, preparedness and luck come in handy.

Sometimes you have a difficult subject and not much of anything you do will change the who you are working with.  Patient, perseverance and finding a subject they like to talk about are the winners.

Then there is working with a photographer.  There is nothing to prepare for when trying to do a portrait of a photographer.  They have been there, done that and you are at their mercy.  Plan to shoot as quickly as possible and be prepared for most everything.  The fav thing to do is a slight rocking motion to make focus impossible.

Then again, the first and last image could be great and well, everything in between is priceless.  Call MasterCard.

I’m working on a video project interview photojournalist around the US regarding the changing landscape of photojournalism.  Did a recent interview with Randy Dieter and Michael Keating in Covington, KY.  Interviews with them were great and the portraits, well you be the judge…  ;-]
